Gerard Marti

All About Gerard Marti

Born and raised on the French Riviera, Gerard Marti attended the prestigious École des Beaux-Arts in Marseille, where, at the age of 18, he began his formal studies in Fine Art and Art History. A few years later, he moved to Paris to pursue a career in the music industry—first as a songwriter, then as a record producer and video director for E.M.I. Records, one of Europe’s leading record companies.

In 1991, disillusioned by the rapidly evolving music scene, Gerard made a bold move and relocated to the United States, settling in Maui, Hawaii. There, he returned to his artistic roots, painting again while managing two successful art galleries. Over the next 23 years, he built a thriving career as a gallery owner and visual artist, becoming an integral part of the island’s cultural fabric.

In 2014, Gerard moved to Birmingham, Michigan, to take over the direction of the renowned Robert Kidd Gallery, where he continued championing contemporary and pop-inspired art.

A decade later, in 2024, he embarked on a new and exciting venture as Director of the newly established New York Paris Art Gallery in Birmingham.

The gallery quickly gained attention for its edgy, global vision and commitment to modern aesthetics.

Gerard Marti’s artwork reflects a unique blend of Postmodern Eclecticism, Symbolism, and Pop Art. His pieces deconstruct and reassemble elements of pop music, advertising, technology, and urban street poetry, creating layered visual narratives filled with cultural references and European flair.

“Pop Art should be glamorous, expendable, mass-produced, and popular,” he says. “My work combines all of these elements. People who look for symbolic meanings often miss the inherent poetry and mystery in the images.”

His artistic approach often appropriates anonymous images, drawn from film stills, advertisements, and iconic erotica. His work is at once provocative, glamorous, and deeply layered. Some pieces intentionally jolt the viewer, encouraging contemplation of identity, consumerism, and mortality.

“The role of an artist is to make the invisible visible. Art is an open window into your own mind,” Marti explains.

Gerard Marti continues to evolve as an artist and curator, always searching for the next frontier where creativity, commerce, and culture intersect.
